MVRDV designed the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennial Museum in 2009 越後妻有アートトリエンナーレ 大地の芸術祭 in Tokamachi City and Tsunan. The region is famous for its hot springs, rice fields, and for the world's largest annual art festival, at 762 km².
This is MVRDV's first project in Japan, also called the Matsudai Snow-land Agrarian Culture Centre. The building rises for the public venue to celebrate the region's agricultural history. Traditional architecture stilts buildings above the snow-line. The legs lean outwards to emphasize the structural volume's heaviness. The thick steel members explode out of the roof. Six staircases take visitors to the exhibition space where six artists display their art.
The design process started with museum functions fit into a small volume. Three circulation paths crossed through this volume according to the site. The result was carefully lifted for an emphasis on exterior activities.
